Historic centre of Monnickendam in Waterland

    Where to stay in Monnickendam

    Middendam 4, 1141 BC Monnickendam

Monnickendam lies in Waterland, north of Amsterdam, on the water of the Gouwzee. It is a small harbour town with a historic core, narrow streets and a marina within walking distance of the centre.

Staying here means choosing a quiet base rather than a big-city stay. Amsterdam is about 14 kilometres away, Volendam about 5 kilometres and Marken about 6 kilometres.

Stay@Gouwzee is a self-contained holiday apartment at Middendam 4, in the historic part of Monnickendam. The apartment is 51 m², sleeps up to 4 guests and has a private kitchen, private bathroom and private roof terrace. You rent the whole place, with no shared spaces.

    Why stay in Monnickendam?

Monnickendam stands out because of its scale. It is a historic harbour town rather than a headline destination, and daily life stays manageable even in high season.

The centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Shops, restaurants and the harbour are close together, so you are not dependent on a car in the evening.

The setting on the Gouwzee defines the town. From the harbour you look out over the water towards Marken; this is one of the places where the IJsselmeer area still borders directly on an old town centre.

Waterland itself is the second argument. The landscape around Monnickendam consists of polders, dykes and small villages, and is popular with cyclists and walkers who want to explore from a single base.

For visitors who want to see North Holland without moving hotels, Monnickendam works as a fixed base camp: Amsterdam, Volendam, Marken and Edam are all a short distance away, while the evenings stay quiet.

Monnickendam as a base for Waterland

Waterland is the area between Amsterdam and the IJsselmeer, with Monnickendam, Broek in Waterland, Marken and Volendam as its best-known places. From Monnickendam you can visit them separately and return to the same address each time.

Volendam is about 5 kilometres away, Marken about 6 kilometres and Edam about 10 kilometres from Monnickendam.

Cycling is a destination in itself here: routes run along dykes and through polders, linking the villages. Our area pages list the attractions, activities and restaurants that guests actually use.

If you want to get on the water, you can rent our sloop Black Pearl through Stay@Gouwzee. That is also possible without staying at the apartment.

    Visiting Amsterdam from Monnickendam

Amsterdam is about 14 kilometres from Monnickendam, so a stay in Monnickendam combines well with one or more days in the city.

Staying in Monnickendam is a different experience from staying in central Amsterdam. You sleep outside the city, in a historic harbour town, and travel in and out for city days. Visitors who want the city programme on their doorstep are better off in Amsterdam itself; those who want to visit the city but sleep quietly choose Monnickendam.

Current information on access, parking and public transport is on our practical page. Timetables change, so we do not fix travel times in this text.

Practical information and accessFrequently asked questions about the area

Monnickendam for a weekend or a longer stay

A weekend in Monnickendam is enough for the historic centre, the harbour and a trip to Volendam or Marken.

With a few extra nights, Waterland itself comes into view: cycling routes along the dykes, the smaller villages in the polder and a day in Edam.

If you combine Monnickendam with Amsterdam, you use the apartment as a fixed base and plan one or two city days without changing accommodation.

For longer stays the private kitchen matters: you are not dependent on restaurants every evening. Availability, prices and the applicable conditions are shown in the booking module on the homepage.
